Bar- end replacements?
My Suntour bar-end shifters are now worn & stripped so I am looking for a set of replacements. My question is: As I search around I see that I can purchase 8 speed shifters, 10 speed shifters. My Shimano set up is the standard 7-3; so how can I be certain which to buy 8 or 10?

Yep, MR is right. You can probably find some friction shifters if you don’t mind super-old-school operation. I’m not sure if the current products from Shimano have the friction option since indexed shifting is the cat’s meow, but if they do you’d be ok there. I kinda miss the days of friction shifters…..it was one of those skills that marked a good cyclist. With indexed shifting, all you have to do now is have minimal motor skills and strong legs. Ha!

If you have a steel frame, it’s entirely possible for you to have a competent frame shop spread the stays to 130mm and then install either a new 8-9 speed wheel, or lace in a new freehub to your existing wheel. The 7-spd and lower hubs used 126mm spacing. I did this to an old British road frame and it was great……they must have done a good job adjusting the stays and lugs because I could still ride that bike no-handed without any leaning or wandering. If you have an aluminum frame, you’re kinda stuck with 7-spd.
You might snoop around on Sheldon Brown’s website or give him a phone call to see if there are any known stashes of old shifters. There probably are, I just have no idea where to look since the old Third Hand catalog died.
EDIT: I browed SB’s site and found this for ya. Looks like they have some Ultegra 8′s that have the friction/index switch. http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/shifters.html
