Are single speed bikes faster then multiple speed bikes?
I was wondering whether Single speed bikes are faster than multiple speed bikes for someone who doesnt do much off roading or mountain riding. If you use your bike mostly for commuting or street riding, will it make more sense to just buy a single speed? I always thought the multiple speed slows you down in the city. For the value, I can get a 7 speed shimano shifter on the same bike for $20.00 more, it also includes hand brakes a is more attractive looking.
For road riding multi geared bikes work best because you can always select the gear that keeps you in the best rpm range for pedaling.
For off-road mtn biking it is a slightly different story. Depending on the trail a single speed can sometimes be faster, I know a lot of people will have issue with that statement, but the reason is that on a single speed you are committed to the gear you have and need to attack the terrain with a different mind set then someone who has gears to choose from. This is not to say every one who rides a single speed will be faster, but during local short track races the single speed riders turn in some crazy fast times. Some of these riders also race on their geared bikes (in other class’) and while fast some will clock in slightly slower. Now, as I mentioned, this seams to depend on the track they are racing. I have seen similar lap time issues with hard-tails and dual susp. bikes, but here it seems to follow that the rougher the track the more it favors a dual susp. bike.
