Fishing reel maximum drag?
What is maximum drag? I’ve been comparing the Penn 750ssm and the Penn Battle BTL7000. The Battle has 25 pounds of max drag but the 750ssm only has 11 pounds because it’s and older model. How will a greater maximum drag help me when fishing for large tarpon on say… 40# braid?
The maximum drag is the tightest you can crank down the drag. A common rule of thumb is to set your drag at about one third the breaking strength of the line. For 40 pound line, that would be about 13 pounds, which is a bit more than the 11 pounds on the 750ssm — you could fish with it, but you wouldn’t be able to put as much pressure on a big fish as you could with a stronger reel. It would be like fighting a fish on 30 pound line even though you’ve got 40 pound.
Beyond that, a drag will wear out more quickly when it’s buttoned down, so a reel with a stronger drag will last longer before you need to replace the washers.
Finally, if you get the BTL7000, you’ll be able to switch up to heavier line if you need to.
