advantages/disadvantages of using a baitcast reel for bass fishing?
I want to learn how to use baitcasters and im planning on buying a shimano crucial with 15 pound spider wire braid and a 6’6″ shimano crucial M action. What are the disadvantages/advantages of using a baitcaster as compared to a spinning reel. thanks.
1) Depending on the lure design, you’ll get no line twist or very little line twist. Too much line twist will cause tangles; it could also weaken your line. You could cast a baitcasting reel MANY more times than a spinning reel before you develop a line twist bad enough to give you problems. This is a big plus when you use lures frequently.
2) Baitcasting reels could handle sizable fish better. This also means baitcasting reels could yank fish away from thick vegetation faster.
3) You could slow your lure/rig down before it hits the water. You could make your lure/rig land on water very quietly without a splash with practice. It is MUCH harder to achieve this kind of stealthiness with a spinning reel.
4) Since you don’t have a bail to mess with, you only need to turn your handle to start retrieving your line. You will really appreciate this quality when you fish with buzzbaits. Also, if a fish hits your lure/bait while it was sinking, you do not need to close your bail to set your hook. This might not sound much but it will definitely make a difference. When bass are not in a positive feeding mood, it is not uncommon that they would drop your lure very shortly after they hit it; a reel with a bail in this kind of situation is a handicap. If you fish near thick vegetation or heavy covers, you want to get your fish away from those thick vegetation or heavy covers as quickly as possible; you’ll really hate that bail in this particular situation.
5) You could cast thick lines much further. Sometimes, you want to use a thick line to keep your lure at certain depth range. Thick lines are more abrasion resistant than thinner lines and they will not dig or carve their way into softer tree branches easily like some braided lines. Being able to handle thick lines is a real plus sometimes.
A spinning reel could handle lighter lures/rigs better than a baitcasting reel. A spinning reel is also easier to cast than a baitcasting reel; even baitcasting reel experts could get bird nests once in a rare while. Other than these, it’s baitcasting reels all the way.
