hi im about to start a 46 gallon salt water fish tank.i want to know whats the cheapest filter a can used.?
and do i need a skimmer..do i need live rock ad i only used live sand..
I don’t know filters as I use sumps.
However a protien skimmer is necissary if you wish to keep any sort of coral or sensitive inverts or fish. Otherwise with weekly water changes you can make do without.
Liverock does help with the biological filtration process, but you could do well with just live sand if you use another biological form of filtration such as bio balls or even an external refugium
