Whats a cheap salt water rod and reel combo for a beginner?
it has to be able to catch snook and tarpon and is easy to use for beginners in salt water fishing or pier fishing and can it be used in a lake
Generally, when it comes to fishing tackle, buying “name brand” is almost always a good idea. (Unless you know WHERE the off-brand has their product made.)
Understand- “Cheap” rarely works when buying saltwater-grade tackle & reels. Would you expect longevity, functionality & durability out of a new $40, non-branded, video game console????
In your case, where you technically want a combo to do “double duty” in Saltwater AND Freshwater, you’ll NEED to spend some money on a reel. (If you want to fudge a bit on the price of a rod you can.)
PLUS, a pier fishing combo requires a certain “heavier action”, longer rod (typically 8′) than a Freshwater Bass rod.
Understand- There is no “do-everything” fishing outfit. You will have to make a decision on whether you want a good Bass fishing outfit OR a good saltwater pier fishing outfit; OR you could purchase a 5600 Abu Garcia C4 outfit- http://www.basspro.com/Abu-Garcia-Ambassadeur-C4-Classic-Round-Baitcast-Reels/product/74091/-1205079 (C4′s can easily translate from Freshwater to Saltwater pier fishing but, in my opinion, aren’t “easy” to learn how to cast. Plus, they are a bit large for Bass fishing.)
They just don’t make “Cheap, Pier, Saltwater, Freshwater Bass, Snook, Tarpon” outfit’s.
In my opinion, you’ll be MUCH more happier if you concentrate on a specific outfit, (for a specific species of fish).
Either, a solid Bass/Inshore Saltwater outfit OR a dedicated Pier outfit. When you begin “compromising”, you end up with a fishing outfit that’s not really “good” at ANY kind of fishing……
OR
You can purchase an off-brand 8′ Pier fishing Spinning outfit and look mighty silly trying to go Bass fishing with it.
