Whats the purpose/difference between a baitcast reel, a Spinning reel, and a fly reel?
Also, why would someone wanna choose one over the other?
Every reel has different “attributes”. Here are the differences:
1. Baitcasters- Baitcast reels have their “pros and cons”. The “pros” are “No twist”, “stronger drag systems”, “accuracy in casting”, “built to withstand punishment”, “wider variety of gear ratios”.
A. No twist- Baitcasters spool the line onto itself like a “winch” making for fewer twists in the line. This prolongs the life of the line and makes for easier casting.
B. Drag System- Typically, BCers have heavier drag systems allowing the fisherman to “horse” strong fighting fish away from line cutting structure.
C. Accuracy in Casing- It is well-known among fishermen how accurate a BCer can be when casting. HOWEVER, learning how to be super accurate with a BCer takes TIME and PRACTICE.
D. Withstand Punishment- BCer’s (typically) are better built and last longer than Spinning reels.
E. Variety of G Ratio’s- BCer’s have a variety of ratios allowing for “super quick” retrieves to slower retrieves.
The “Cons” of BCing-
A. It can be VERY difficult to learn how to cast a BCer, (accurately). They are not a “forgiving” reel design. If you miscalculate and ruin your cast it can (and probably will) end in (the famous) “Birds Nest”. A Birds Nest is slang term for a horrible tangle in your line. These tangles can be so bad you have to remove (and cut) the line and replace with NEW line; which can be expensive and time consuming.
In the past, Birds Nests were a common occurrence, (esp for the novice caster). However, todays BC reels have better cast controls all but eliminating the worst of the “tangles”.
B. GOOD BCers tend to be expensive. A cheap BCer (worth owning) would price out around $60-$80. NEVER purchase a BCer that normally sells for under $40. It’s a WASTE of money!
1. Spinning Reels-
PRO’s- “Ease of use”, “Inexpensive”, “Distance casting”, “ease of use with lower diameter line”.
A. Ease of USE- Spinning reels are very easy to learn how to use. Someone who wants to begin fishing should probably start on a SP reel.
B. Inexpensive- SP reels are typically cheaper than BCer’s.
C. Distance Casting- SP reels have the ability for LONG casts.
D. Lower diameter line- SP reels are MUCH easier to use with line diameters equaling 4 – 10LB Mono.
Cons of SP reels- Twist!!!!! Drag!!!!! and durability.
Spinning reels are notorious for twisting line. Twisted line causes tangles and degrades the line. Sp reels typically don’t have as strong a drag system as BCers and are generally considered not as durable as a BCer.
Fly Reels- Fly reels are strictly used for fly fishing. All fly reels use the same principle- holding your fly line. Usually the finer the materials and design, (IE- Machined Barstock Aluminum, cork and gear driven drag systems) the more expensive the reel.
