Anyone know any good fishing spots in Far Rockaway,NY?
I have never been fishing. I want to start a new hobby. Can anyone tell me a little about choosing a rod and reel combo. I saw a couple in Modell’s for about $30-$60. But i don’t know which to choose.Between casting and spinning and saltwater or freshwater.please help.
Grew up in Queens & have been fishing on & off for many years.
Have fished the surf ,bridges & piers in the area .
Modells or the Sports authority sometimes have decent saltwater spinning rod/ reel combos in that range.
I would go w/ a spinning outfit which is fine for bait & artificial lures .
A 7′ rod will be ok for most things , around 9′ is better for the surf.
Find out what the locals are using & dont go nuts on tackle.
Buy what basics you need for the season & what fish are running.
I just have 2 rods & a small soft tackle bag that holds everything I need for salt & freshwater fishing.
Best tips I have, are to rinse the saltwater out of your gear, carry a knife, a rag & ignore the guys who say” you should have been here yesterday”.
If nothing is biting , the BS & the laughs w/ people you meet are worth the price of a bag of bait.
