shimano 105 or tiagra?
i currently cover about 200km on my bike each week. which would be a more sensible choice or would it be more worth it to pay a few hundred or so to get 105? looking for something that is long lasting, durable and does not require much maintenence.
Shimano road lineup goes from Dure-Ace, to Ultegra to 105 to Tiagra to Sora. The first three are considered race capable since they are lighter and emphasize shifting speed for the extra $$. I have mainly Ultegra, 105 components on my various bikes, but had no reservations about putting Tiagra shifters on my tandem when I had to replace the original 105 shifters after 7 years use. The main difference is a bit higher weight for the Tiagra … not a big concern on a 35 pound tandem!
That said, I would choose a 105 groupo over Tiagra if I intended to ride lots. Not so much because it would be more durable (I doubt there is much difference), but because the level of performance is a bit better and overall lighter.
The question whether the difference is worth the extra $$ is really one only you can answer. My personal cuttoff point is no lower than 105 on any new bike (It used to be Ultegra, but the extra cost no longer seems warranted for me.)
