What kind of Rod and Reel do I need for Striped Bass in Texas?
I am going fishing for striped bass/hybrids soon and I am afraid that my rods aren’t beefy enough for them. What kind of rods and reels to you use for stipers? I have a quantum baitcasting combo and a couple spinning reels. I also have some saltwater gear that my grandfather left me. I don’t want to break a rod. Any help you could offer would be appreciated.
A medium heavy 6’6″-7’6″ rod and a baitcaster with a good drag system would be adequate for any striper of Texas proportions. Yes, I know everythings bigger in Texas…that’s where I grew up. You might want to use a quality braided line (50-65# test) if you are jigging for deep schooling stripers, or heavy 20# Berkley Big Game on you large spinning reels if you are using Zara Spooks or other topwater plugs.
