Mt Bike mechanical disc brake making clicking sound?
I have a Mt Bike with shimano 445 disc brakes. The front disc set has a clicking sound originating from the caliper housing (for lack of a better term). The sound occurs after every other notch on the outer edge of the disc passes through the housing. The disc is true…no warping. When I have the bike up on it’s rear wheel , front in the air so I can rotate the wheel horizontally to the right or left, the sound goes away while the wheel is spinning. With the wheel straight and on the ground, the sound occurs… while riding or just spinning it while up off the ground and vertical.
What should I look for? The brake works fine, but I’d hate to be bombing down a hill and have that front disc brake lock on me causing a face plant accompanied with a nose adjustment on my face!! :twitchy: Any advise out there?
Since the sound is only present when you have weight on the front wheel, my immediate thought is to look along the outer edge of your disc and see if there is anything making contact with the caliper. Its possible you may have bent the disc caliper slightly and its making edge contact under a load. It sounds benign and harmless. Unless your brakes are in serious disrepair, its almost impossible for a mechanical caliper to lock-up on you for any reason. They are designed to not engage 99,99% of the time.
