Huh? I thought Daiwa was the Apex rod/reel maker?
A few months ago, I asked on YA about getting a new rod. They all voted Daiwa, So i went out and picked up a $110 rod.
Now, in the survey i just “took” a few hours ago, it appears that daiwa has been lapped by shimano and penn reels.
So, whats up?
Daiwa makes good gear! So does Shimano! Even Penn still has some quality reels & rods, (although Penns gear is more slanted toward the In-shore/Offshore crowd). Abu Garcia is another quality company!
In the last 3 years I’ve been amazed at the quality, (VS PRICE) that Pflueger has offered.
But for me, it always comes down to price first.
As much as I’d like to have 8 Shimano Cores on Kistler, Carrot Stix or G. Loomis rods my budget almost always suggests what I’ll be buying.
In my opinion, there is a “glass ceiling” that you reach when you get around $120. Most reels & rods over that price tag are going to be decent, (except the occasional “dud”). Ironically, many component parts from Daiwa, Shimano, Penn, Abu & Pflueger reels/rods are manufactured in China and shipped to other parts of the World to be assembled. A little known fact………
If you’re REALLY interested in getting top-notch gear at a decent price look into purchasing used and new equipment on EBay. I have purchased MANY reels and rods on EBay with EXCELLENT results. As a tournament Bass fisherman, I need quality product at a fair price.
When I fish a T , I ALWAYS have 6-7 rods on the deck. And when your fishing T, you tend to abuse your equipment……..accidentally stepping on rod tips……burning out drags in 1 season..Etc. I’ve “rotated out” 1 reel just this season! I’ve probably caught over 1000 fish this season- that puts tremendous stress on rods & reels! And although G Loomis & Carrot Stix have an excellent return policy, their warranties don’t cover outfits that accidentally went overboard or snapped by a clumsy footed fisherman.
My budget per outfit is around $150. I tend to spend a little more on the reel than the rod. Esp since Berkley has released their Shock series. With a Shock I can fish it “to death” for one season and if it breaks or gets stepped on I don’t feel so bad because their average price is $58. You see, for T Bass fishing you need various different outfit’s. I currently have about 14 “Bass fishing” outfits. Having 14 G Loomis/Curado outfit’s is unrealistic and (honestly) DANG EXPENSIVE, (unless, of course, you get a sponsor who will GIVE you $200-$400 rods and reels FOR FREE)! Esp if there’s a possibility of losing them overboard on a choppy day or breaking the tips accidentally!
Bottom-line? If you payed $110 for your rod, 90% of the time you got a decent rod. Don’t worry about the name on the rod- just worry about the components.
