What is a good, affordable trolling reel preferably penn?
I am looking at a new rod reel combo but i want a good reel before the rod. What is a good cheap all around trolling reel that i could catch 40+lb catfish, sturgeon, and alligator gar on? I would like for it to have a line counter and to be around $50 bucks preferably cheaper. And if anyone knows a good rod to go with it that would also be cheap, it would really help alot thank you
One reel comes to mind when you said under $50, trolling conventional reel, for large fish. That’s the Shakespeare Tidewater reel. These are around $34 – $45 at Wal-Mart depending on which model you purchase. A good trolling rod that comes to mind that’s cheap, is the Shakespeare Sturdy Stik. It’s a $20 rod, but there’s been 100lb Catfish brought in with them. They’re a cheaper version of the Big Water Ugly Stik’s, but these only come in 6′ to 7′ sizes. The 6’6 MH rated up to 8oz weights will work great from a boat. You can get a real good deal on a rod & reel for huge fish… Say $40 for the Tidewater, $20 for the Sturdy Stik. I know quite a few boat fishermen who use those combo’s to catch 40lb + fish a lot. Make sure to spool your reel up with a good mono (with a wire leader when chasing Gar) such as Ande or Berkley Big Game. With a very heavy mono leader when not using wire leaders. 60lb or 80lb mono leaders with around a 30lb or 40lb main-line.
There’s tons of lightly used Tidewater reels on eBay for $10 – $25. Some say the older ones are better made than the new ones. Either one would be a good choice.
