what size hooks do i need for 25 lb tuna?
im going on an overnight trip out of sandiego down into mexico and they are catching albacore, dorado, yellowfin and even a few bluefin. i need to know all the gear i need . right now i got 2 heavy action surf rods that i use for 15-50 lb bass with some big @ss shimano spining reels on them. i was planning on borrowing a friends bait rods and also using them. im a noob catching these fish please help! thanks oh and are you casting metal jigs or baitfishing ?
Surf rods? You’re joking right?
Definetly get some baitcasting gear, or else you’ll look like a total noob. Also, its almost impossible to have a rod rated for 15-50lb. test line. I highly suggest that you shouldn’t go on a overnighter for your very first trip, you’ll be completely confused on what to do with things such as troll rotation, the lingo used such as “color”, and “hot rail”.
Well, anywway, you’ll need 1/0 to 5/0 hooks for Yellowtail, Dorado, Bluefin, and Yellowfin. These 1/0 to 5/0 hooks should be used with sardines. Size 4 and size 6 hooks if you’ll be fishing with anchovies for the albacore.
Spectra backing is encouraged, but 25lb or 30lb mono will do fine. Rods should be no bigger than 7′. Reels should be a low gear ratio for bait fishing, and 2-speed for jig fishing.
