i have a fishing reel and it says 5.2:1 gear ratio…what does this really mean?

The gear ratio is easy — every turn of the handle turns the spool 5.2 times. The higher the gear ratio, the faster you can retrieve. Multiply the spool circumference by the gear ratio and you’ll find how much line comes in for each turn of the handle. 5.2 is a pretty good gear ratio for a reel of this size — for freshwater reels with small spools you might want a higher ratio, but for a 30 lb test saltwater reel, this is fine. Any higher and it will be hard to turn the crank on a strong fish.
As to the drag — the reel is made for 30 pound test. A normal drag setting is about 1/3 of the line test, so normally you would set it at 10 pounds; however, it’s not uncommon to “overload” a reel with heavier line (I’ve fished 40 on similar sized reels), so I would expect Shimano would make the drag smooth up to at least 13-15 pounds, and probably up to 20 or more.
I’ve buttoned down my Daiwas enough to break 30 pound line when snagged on the bottom, and I would expect Shimanos would have the same capability (though my old Penn Jigmasters couldn’t be set that tight. The only Shimanos I’ve used are lever drags, so I’m just guessing here.)
