soft plastic fishing line?
I just got a new st croix mojo bass plastics rod, and a shimano caenan reel. I’m going to be using it for mostly tubes, lizards, creature baits, worms, and swimbaits for bass. I will be mostly using a texas rig. I’m debating in between 12 lb fluro line and 15 lb fluro line for my main line. Thanks.
drop down to 10 and go with a good quality nylon mono rather than fluorocarbon.
fluoro is fine on crankbaits and other sinking/diving swimming type lures.
BUT… when fishing on the bottom with soft plastics and using the slow retrieves commonly used with them, fluorocarbon will sink ALL the way to the bottom allowing itself to get more readily caught in bottom growth, sticks, rocks and such. mono, having a more neutral buoyancy will be slower to sink and become entangled in weeds.
here is an example… fluorocarbon:
you have weeds growing up 3 feet from the bottom in 6 feet of water. cast out straight. worm gets picked up by a 12lb bass who proceeds to move off at a right angle to your cast. you wait until he snugs up your line and rear back to set the hook. haul water. your line bent around one of those stalks of weed in effect giving you an additional 3 feet of slack that only showed up as you tried to set the hook on a bunch of weeds and allowing that monster trophy of a lifetime to slip away.

same scenario. except the body of your line is still suspended in the water column. line tightens up – a closer, more direct contact with the fish. you set the hook. that 4/0 worm hook just buried itself in the fish’s jaw. the monster leaps throwing water everywhere. your heart stops momentarily. you stand there in wonder, slack jawed, drooling like an idiot. right hand forgets what the left hand is doing and you again jerk the rod breaking the tip AND the line losing ANYWAY, a potential record fish.
BUT NOT because you weren’t using fluorocarbon.
only because the big ones always get away.
