Shimano Fishing Rod Trip

Shimano Fishing Rod Trip
Are there fishing setups good enough for an overnight trip or even a 2 or 3 day out of Newport Beach?

I have an Avet Sx on a Shimano 15-30 pound rod. I have an Abu Garcia Revo Toro 60 on a Shimano Trevala 15-30 rod. I have a Shimano Torium 30 on a Shimano Tallus 20-50 rod. And i have an Avet Jx 6.1 on a Shimano Voltaeus 20-40 rod. Would this be good enough for my son and I to go on at least a 2 day trip? And can anyone reccomend what type and how heavy of test to put on each setup? Thanks, Happy Fishing and Tight Lines

I haven’t used the models you list (I don’t own any Avets and only a couple of Shimanos), but I checked out the specs on the web and is seems like you’ve got some good outfits.

From the web, the Abu Revo Toro 60 is built for 14 pound line, the Avet SX is made for 20 pound line, the Shimano Torium 30 is made for 30 pound line, and the Avet JX is good for 40 pound line. Those numbers fall in the ranges for the rods, so that’s what I’d go with.

That seems like a good combination of outfits for offshore or island southern California fishing in the summer – the problem might be if two of you are expecting to share them. For example, if you get into a yellowtail bite where 30 pound isn’t bit, and 14 pound isn’t strong enough to keep the fish out of the reef, only one of you will really be able to fish at a time.

I normally take 4-6 different outfits on such trips (15-50 pound line), some for bait fishing, some for casting jigs, and if it’s tuna fishing, an 80 pound outfit for trolling. (If you’re on a tuna trip, most boats do have trolling outfits to loan out, so you don’t need to worry about having your own.)

I’d suggest that whatever you do, take a few local trips beforehand to get used to the fishing and how to use the tackle. You should check with a local tackle shop for specific details on brands and rigging and the other tackle you’ll need.
