Should I buy a 26″ FS or a 29er hardtail?
I currently have a trusty 26″ GT hardail that is bombproof. However, I have been doing longer and longer rides and will be doing several 6, 12, and 18hr enduro races this year. I figure after my first race that I will shell out around $1500 for a new bike. I plan to cannibalize my 26 hardtail since I have been building it up with a full Shimano XT drive train and a nice easton wheelset. So should I buy a FS 26 and swap parts with my 26 HT or get a 29er and do the same minus the wheelset? Also, what would you reccomend for either a FS 26 or a 29er for around $1500? Im 5’11″ 180lbs so a large would probably be best but my inseam is very close to a medium.
I’m 6’2″ 175 and in a similar situation. I’m only interested in upgrading from my Ricochet because of the lack of rear disc mounts. I’m leaning more towards full suspension 26″ since I can reuse a lot of the parts that I have upgraded, also. I’m also not all that impressed with 29′ers since the handleing felt kind of schoolbus’ish to me. Try out a something close to what you would build for yourself, though. That will be the best way to answer this question.
