broken anti reverse system on conventional reel?
hello, i have an old penn 155 saltwater reel and the anti reverse system seems to be broken. there is no switch to turn it on or off and every time i pull line out, the handle just spins backwards. what could be the problem? how can i fix it? -thanks
There is a lever above the handle on the right hand side of the reel. That lever is your anti-reverse switch. Penn called this part “eccentric lever” and it was fastened to your reel via a screw called “eccentric screw”. If you do not see any lever above you star drag/handle, then these parts are missing. The cost of those parts should be less than $5.00 before shipping and handling.
Your reel handle should not turn backward at all. If it is turning backwards, then parts inside the reel weren’t installed correctly. I think your “eccentric jack, pining gear and pining yoke” assembly wasn’t installed correctly. This could be easily taken cared off within 5 minutes in experienced hands. Any place that offers reel service can do this for you at a small price.
You could do this yourself too. You’ll need to a Penn 155 schematics diagram, some simple tools, and a lot of confidence. If you decided to do this yourself, you should check for missing parts first. The experience might be a frustrating but most people could do it. The most frustrating part will be keeping dog and dog spring in place while putting the reel back together. You’ll also need to pay a little attention when you install your eccentric spring; the spring is under pretty high tension and you don’t want any objects fly into your eye. I do not expect you could put everything back together correct the first couple times. But, do not worry. Peen 155 isn’t that complicated and you should be able to put the puzzle together after several attempts.

Hints: The pinion gear should move when you move your eccentric lever. You should be able to hear or feel your anti-reverse working or not working.
Tips: The moving parts were held together by screws on the right hand side. When those screws were missing, internal parts will move. It is very difficult to keep parts in place without those screws. Use long screws from other parts of the reel to hold internal parts in place; you screw in those long screws through the holes inside (opposite side). When you need to screw in proper screws, back those long screws out gradually as the regular screws advances; those long screws will also serve as guide rods. You might not understand a thing I said above now. But, you’ll figure it out when you got loose parts on hand. 
PS: If you must spend $15 or more on parts and labor, buying another reel will be a better option. You could find used Penn 155′s for around that price on eBay if you are patient enough. If this must happen, keep your existing reel as a parts reel.
